Newark , NJ 2nd Alarm - 96 Sussex Ave - 7/5/21
Newark, NJ 2nd Alarm Fire
96 Sussex Ave.
Early morning of July 5th, 2021
Firefighters were dispatched in the early morning hours to a reported house fire at 96 Sussex Ave. First due companies arrived to find heavy fire showing from multiple cars that extended to side B of a 3sty wood frame flat top multi dwelling. A Signal 11 (Working Fire) was requested on arrival followed minutes later by a request for a 2nd alarm by the on duty Deputy. The first due engine attempted to tie into the hydrant but couldn't establish a water supply from it as it broke and fell over before use. The lack of initial water didn't hamper firefighting efforts though as the situation was quickly rectified while crews simultaneously ran multiple big lines. Multiple ladder companies went to work opening up a rear porch roof as well as the roof of the main structure while the engine companies worked said big lines to extinguish the fire. The heaviest of the fire was knocked down within 15-20 minutes with firefighters remaining on scene opening up and wetting down hot spots.
While I'm unsure the extent of their injuries, if any, a family who lived in the dwelling appeared from between the house and the fenced in lot where the car fires were approx. 25min into the fire attack. They were transferred to awaiting EMS personnel for care, evaluation and transport if necessary.
