Response: Wilmington Engines 4/1 and Tower 1. Mutual aid on scene was North Reading Engine 3, Reading Engine 3, Tewksbury Engine 2, Woburn Engine 2 and Stoneham Ladder 1. Covering the Wilmington station were Engines from Andover and Burlington.
Fire was reported in a barn IAO 249 Lowell St with Police arriving first to confirm smoke showing from a 2sty Carriage House at 249B Lowell St. Wilmington Engine 4 arrived to report light smoke showing followed closely by Engine 1, whose commander reported heavy smoke and requested the working fire. Fire was found to be traveling thru the walls of the structure from the lower level into the heavily cluttered upper level where conditions rapidly deteriorated. Chief Cavanaugh requested a 2nd alarm at that point and companies went into a defensive posture with fire breaking thru the roof on the C side as well as the B side gable end. Multiple lines were stretched alongside aerial master streams off both the Stoneham and Wilmington aerials. The fire took a shade over an hour to bring under control with companies remaining on scene for a time thereafter to overhaul and wet down hot spots.
