Belmont, MA 2nd Alarm - 115 Mill St at McLean Hospital - 11/14/16
After receiving several calls over a long duration for smoke in the area, Belmont firefighters discovered a building fire on the campus of McLean Hospital located at 115 Mill St.
A second alarm was requested bringing in mutual aid from surrounding communities to assist. The fire originated on floor 2 of the former "Codman Building", a large 3 story brick building long abandoned and completely enveloped in overgrown brush.
Firefighters battled the flames from a defensive posture from the beginning as the building was marked with a red "X" signifying conditions too hazardous for an interior firefighting attack. Several hand lines, blitz fire nozzles, deck guns and 3 ladder pipes were used thru out the duration of the fire.
Fire crews remained on scene for several hours into the day wetting down hot spots. Investigators from the State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal's office were brought in and the fire is currently under investigation.
