Haverhill, MA W/F+ - 20 Arlington St. - 4/8/17
Mid Saturday morning April 8th, Haverhill Fire Alarm sent out a telephone alarm for a structure fire at 20 Arlington St right off the downtown area.
Multiple calls were recieved and the Deputy Chielf enroute reported seeing heavy smoke and requested a working fire upon arrival. The fire was in a large 2.5 story occupied dwelling with a similar size structure on the "D" side being the only exposure. Companies had a heavy smoke and fire condition on the 2nd floor whcih had extended into the attic area thru the walls of the old balloon frame construction home. Crews did make some headway with an interior attack but the fire had advanced too far ahead of them and the decision was made to transition into a defensive attack. Multiple special calls for manpower were made including Salem NH Tower Ladder 1 which alongside Haverhill Ladder 4 ran master stream appliances to knock the fire down. Several hand lines were stretched around the building as firefighters continued opening up. After 1.5-2 hours the fire was under control enough to allow fire crews back into the building to overhaul and finish wetting down hot spots. Crews remained on scene for several hours to do so.
Mutual aid coverage from several surrounding cities was brought into Haverhill's Water St HQ station while HFD units were at the fire.
