Lawrence, MA 2nd Alarm - Oxford St and Milville/Champlain Ave's - 5/29/17
Mid morning, on Memorial Day Monday May 29th 2107, Lawrence firefighters were dispatched to a reported building fire in the area of Oxford St and Milville Ave. The Lawrence Police reported a “working fire” as Engines 5, 6 and 7, Ladder 5 and Rescue 1 were pulling out the doors. Upon arrival, firefighters reported having a 2.5 story duplex, that sat behind a large 2 story equivalent metal clad garage was well involved and extending to both that garage and a 1.5 story multi bay wood and masonry garage off Champlain Ave. A working fire followed quickly thereafter by a request for a 2nd alarm were made by Deputy Fire Chief Loughlin.
Firefighters from Engine 5 and Rescue 1 were able to stretch a big line to the small area between the duplex’s Champlain Ave address and the multi bay garage. They were able to knock down a lot of the fire on the exterior of the home which had extended into the first and second floors as well as the attic of the duplex’s Milville Ave address. But the fire was able to penetrate into the metal clad garage where it took full control of several cars, a motorcycle and various other contents within the building. Heavy smoke and fire began blowing out all 3 large bay doors, 2 on the A side and 1 on the B side which melted and burned off the buildings power supply creating a downed live power line hazard. Crews from Engine 7 and Ladder 5 got initial positioning on the B side of the structure on Milville Ave and ran multiple lines, a blitz gun and an aerial master stream with help from mutual aid manpower.
The duplex sustained major damage to one side, which housed a children’s daycare that was thankfully not open that day because of the holiday. The smaller multi bay garage sustained minimal damage, limited to 2 stalls while the metal clad garage was completely gutted on the inside. There were no injuries reported and the fire is still under investigation by the LFD FIU and State Fire Marshal’s office.
Firefighters from Andover, North Andover and Methuen assisted at the scene while additional coverage for the city was brought in from other area department’s.
