Lawrence, MA 3rd Alarm - 1 Broadway - 1/2/23
Lawrence, 3rd Alarm
1 Broadway
Evening of Monday January 2, 2023
Response: Lawrence Engines 6/7/8/9, Ladders 4/5, Squad 1, C21 Deputy McInnis, C20 Chief Moriarty and the FIU. Mutual Aid on scene were Engines from Methuen, Andover, Dracut, N Andover and Haverhill with a ladder from Lowell. Coverage at Central were Engines from N Reading, Middleton and Danvers with a Salem NH Tower.
Central alarm received with Squad 1, Ladder 5 and Car 21 Deputy McInnis dispatched. On arrival, C21 observed a fire on the 5th floor of a large 6sty mill building and requested a working fire assignment. Once firefighters were able to reach the fire floor, they encountered heavy smoke with reduced visibility and high heat. A 2nd alarm was requested by C21 bringing in the remaining Lawrence companies and engines from Andover and Methuen.
2 lines were run from the ground floor to the upper floors from the outside with Ladder 5 taking out windows to release some of the heat and smoke while interior crews operated. Due to the buildings size and the amount of grunt work involved in extinguishing the fire, Car 20 Chief of Department Moriarty requested a 3rd alarm with those companies to stage at 45 Broadway. They included engines from N Andover and Haverhill with a Lowell ladder (which took the C side of the building on request)
All told it took over an hour of hard work to knock the fire down with most companies remaining for an additional hour plus to chase pockets of fire. A detail engine remains on scene as I type this. Not a whole heck of a lot to see from outside but smoke, so nothing spectacular here. Great job by the Lawrence brothers in working hard to get ahead of and put the fire out.
