Lawrence, MA 3rd Alarm Plus
90 & 98 Essex St Downtown
Early morning Friday March 17, 2023
Response: Lawrence Engines 6/7/8/9, Ladders 4 & 5, Squad 1, C21 Deputy Meaney, C20 Chief Moriarty and the FIU. Mutual Aid on scene were engines from Andover, N Andover, Methuen, Haverhill, Dracut and N Reading with ladders from Lowell and Salem NH. Coverage at Central were engines from Reading, Middleton and Danvers with a Haverhill ladder (not 100% positive on all the cover companies).
Lawrence Fire Alarm send out box 2111 for an automatic fire alarm received from 98 Essex St around 4am on Friday morning March 17th. Dispatched were Squad 1, Ladder 5 and Car 21 Deputy Chief Meaney.
On arrival firefighters had nothing showing from the single story taxpayer occupied by Sweet Grace Heavenly Cakes at 98 Essex and Sweeney's Liquor Store at 90 Essex. As crews investigated inside the bakery, an odor of smoke followed by a smoke condition were found prompting C21 to request an additional engine. Lines began to be stretched to the basement of both businesses with the thought of a possible basement when heavy fire was subsequently found above multiple ceilings running the cockloft of the shared structure.
A full working fire assignment was requested plus an additional ladder truck above that assignment. Shortly thereafter, seeing heavy smoke now pushing from the rear of the liquor store, C21 requested a 2nd alarm and pulled firefighters from the building as fire was now in full control of the cockloft and began burning through the roof in the rear. As additional help started to arrive and began setting up blitz guns, Car 20 Chief Moriarty requested a 3rd alarm plus an additional ladder truck and engine over the full 3rd alarm.
Firefighters spent the next several hours lobbing water through 4 aerial master streams, 2 blitzfires and multiple additional hand lines to bring the fire under control. The fire building was within inches of an additional commercial structure on the #4 side but crews were able to keep the fire contained to the original building and its 2 businesses. All told, firefighters from Andover, N Andover, Methuen, Dracut, Haverhill, N Reading, Lowell and Salem NH worked alongside the on-duty crews from the LFD. Additional mutual aid covered the Lawrence Central Station while the fire was brought under control.
The building has since been torn down but a cause is still pending while under investigation by local authorities and the State Fire Marshals office.
