Lawrence, MA 2nd Alarm - 135 Butler St at the Bruce School - 11/14/16
A call for alarms sounding from the alarm company prompted Lawrence Fire Alarm to send out Box 5111 for the Bruce School located at 135 Butler St in Lawrence's Tower Hill neighborhood. A followup phone call thereafter from the school reporting a possible electrical fire meant adding an additional engine on the box. Engines 5, 6, 7, Ladder 5, Rescue 1 and C21 Deputy Loughlin were dispatched to the scene. An additional phone call from the school confirmed a fire in room 27 on floor 2.
Engine 5 arrived on scene with light smoke showing from what was an occupied school. Upon entry, Rescue 1 Lt Nadeau reported heavy smoke on floor 2. Firefighters made entry to a room on the top floor A/B corner to find a heavy fire condition.
Acting Fire Chief McInnis requested an additional Ladder, Ladder 4 to the scene followed up shortly after with a request for the full 2nd alarm assignment. Engines from Methuen and North Andover along with Lawrence Engine 9 responded on the 2nd alarm. Firefighters ran 2 lines to floor 2 and knocked down the fire in short order but remained on scene for several hours thereafter to overhaul.
Additional cover companies were brought in to cover Lawrence Central Firehouse on Lowell St.
All in all, the reason for fire drills are to prevent a potential tragedy by teaching students and faculty alike what to do in the case of an emergency. It certainly paid dividends as more than 500 children and staff safely evacuated the school to a nearby facility per the school dept protocol. Excellent work by Firefighters, Police and School administration!
