Lawrence, MA 2nd Alarm - 18-20 Sargent St - 2/3/16
After recieving a call from Lawrence Police and Lawrence General Hospital, Lawrence Fire alarm sent out box 2111 for the address of 20 Sargent St. The call was for a light pole on fire that had fallen on the house and caught the house on fire.
Due to weather conditions including rain and strong wind, companies had been spread out on calls thruout the city and out of their first alarm districts. Engines 5 and 7, Ladder 5, Rescue 1 and Car 21, Deputy Chief Meaney were on the initial response with Engine 6 clearing up from a call on Winthrop Ave added a few minutes later.
Engine 7 arrived first and reported a tree limb down on wires which had fallen on a large 2.5 story duplex and immediately requested the working fire. Due to live downed power lines, getting an adequate water supply proved difficult. Firefighters had heavy fire conditions on the A/B side of the house that extended into the attic area where strong winds carried the fire thruout the attic and eventually thru the roof of the home. A defensive posture with a ladder pipe off Ladder 5 along with several hand lines were depolyed to bring the fire under control. It took about 60-90 minutes to do so with the help of Methuen and Andover firefighters alongside the Lawrence crews.
The power company, National Grid, did not show up at the scene until 90 minutes into the fire, after it had been darkened down with their excuse being "large call volume" due to the weather.
Lawrence firefighters did save a number of animals from the house including 3 dogs and a large bird amongst others. All occupants were able to escape and aside from 1 firefighter, there were no injuries reported. His injuries were non life threatening.
