Lawrence, MA 3rd Alarm - 12 Lafayette Ave - 8/29/16
Early Monday morning, around 01:30, Lawrence Fire Alarm dispatched Engines 5, 6, 9, Ladder 4, Rescue 1 and C21 Deputy Jack Meaney to box 7111 for 10-12 Lafayette Ave on reports from neighbors of seeing a fire in the building.
Ladder 4 was first to arrive and reported heavy fire from a 2.5 story wood frame and a working fire was ordered by Captain Zahn. After a quick sizeup, L4 reported to the Deputy that all residents were out and accounted for and that the 2nd floor was fully involved. Deputy Meaney arrived shortly after and requested a second alarm assignment bringing in Lawrence Engine 7 and Ladder 5 along with Andover Engine 1 and Methuen Engine 3. Firefighters eventually went into a defensive attack due to the heavy fire condition thruout floor 2 and extending up. Several hand lines were put into operation around the structure which had no exposures along with ladder pipe operations from both Ladders 4 and 5. Engine 9s deck gun was also put into operation. Acquiring an adequate water supply to feed the lines proved to be difficult and a 3rd alarm was transmitted. Additional companies on the 3rd alarm were Engines from North Andover, Dracut and Haverhill with a Ladder truck from Lowell. All incoming 3rd alarm companies were ordered to stage on Broadway and report to the front of the building for manpower.
It took firefighters the better part of an hour to bring the fire under control. While companies operated at the fire, additional units were brought in from North Reading, Middleton and Danvers with Engines and a tower ladder from Salem NH to cover Lawrence Central station on Lowell St.
