Lawrence, MA Suspicious Package - Plaza 114 on S Union St IFO Radio Shack - 5/6/15
Lawrence Police and Fire were dispatched to the area of Radio Shack located in the Plaza 114 shopping center between Winthrop Ave and S Union St for a reported suspicious package. Caller reported a person on a bicycle rode up, dropped the package and rode away.
Units arrived on scene and observed a package placed next to a support column between the Radio Shack and Family Dollar stores. The police department immediately staged a number of units around the area, set up a 300ft perimeter and cleared the area of shoppers and their vehicles.
The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad was requested and were on scene within 30-45 minutes with 2 technicians. After about 20 minutes of investigating the package, it was deemed to be a non threat and the incident began to de-escalate.
Members of Lawrence Police retrieved the package which turned out to be a countertop fryer that had some duct tape wrapped around a portion of it.The plaza was reopened to the public a short time later.
** On a side note, I don't shoot PD incidents too often, therefore I wasn't sure where to put this on my site. Because the FD was there and operating too, and the incident WAS in Lawrence, I put it here for now. If I expand into shooting more PD related incidents, Ill create an area to organize these types of incidents.
